Professor Jadwiga Warszyńska

Prof. dr hab. Jadwiga Warszyńska died on 19th August 2011. She was the founder and the Head of the Department of Tourism Geography (1979-1994) at the Institute of Geography, Jagiellonian University.

In the early period of her scientific activity, her main research interests were related to geography of transport and services. However from the second half of 1960s, her main research interest became the geography of tourism. Research from this area are methodological and theoretical studies, which include those dealing with quantitative methods od assessing the environment for the purpose of tourism, as well as monographies studies of various area in Poland, especially Cracow and the Carpathians mountains. A synthesis of the methodological and theoretical achievements of Professor Warszyńska is the book entitled "Basics of the Geography of Tourism" written together with prof. Antoni Jackowski.

Prof. Jadwiga Warszyńska's important area of scientific activity were initiating and organizing collective research and studies. It is worth to emphasis several studies: an extensive monographie entitled "Województwo tarnowskie" (Tarnów Voivodeship; Ossolineum, 1988) - she was the editor and co-author of this research work, and a two-volume textbook entitled "Geografia Turystyczna Świata" (World tourism geography; PWN 1994, 1995, 1997, 2000) - the first in the world literature with such a wide substantive scope in this research area. In 1995, prof. Jadwiga Warszyńska was the editor of the monograpie entitled "Polish Carphatians - nature, man and his activities". It was the first, such extensive monograpie on Carpathians mountains in the literature. Prof. Warszyńska was also the editor of  "Zeszyty Naukowe Jagiellonian University - Geographical Works (Economic Geography series)". She also participated in the work of editorial committiees of many journals, e.g. "Folia Geographica. Series Geographica-Oeconomica", "Tourism" and "Problemy Turystyki".

Prof. Jadwiga Warszyńska was also the member of many scientific societies. She was widely respected among the academic community
